WP4: Micrometeorology

The overall objective of this work package is coordination of the micrometeorological assessments based on lidar from offshore buoy and ship-based lidar, from profiling and scanning lidar in complex terrain and from lidar measuring at high levels in the atmosphere. Furthermore, experimental activities with satellite data for wind mapping and wind forecasting are included.

Experiments using lidar in complex terrain and offshore are based on the largest complex terrain experiment for wind energy ever conducted (in Portugal). Computational Fluid Mechanics models will be improved and validated. 

Floating (ship and buoy) lidar data analysis will involve wind profiling lidar data from Aeolus for forecasting winds. The objective of this task is to investigate the potential of Aeolus wind profiling data for assimilation for wind forecasting. The project will investigate data quality and usefulness in particular for offshore application in wind energy.

Wind lidars open a great flexibility in the setup of measurement campaigns. This is reflected in the variety of scanning strategies used by researchers of different fields. Here the lessons learned from previous campaigns of the partners will be collected at the beginning of the project to help in the derivation of quality assurance methods for new campaigns.

The value of measured data can best be realised if they are stored in a way that lends itself to the data analysis and makes them readily accessible to others. FAIR principles will be used. Processed and quality assured data, including metadata, will be made available from a common data portal using Open Data standards, providing data with DOI’s where appropriate and Open Science principles.
